Welcome to the home page of Visalia Karate-Do. We are a school of Traditional Japanese Budo. Established in 1975, our Karate-Do program is the oldest in Visalia. As a member of the City of Visalia Parks and Recreation Department, we are the official Karate-Do program for the city. Our program is designed to promote Self Confidence, Self Defense, Self Discipline, and Character Building Virtues. Our school and our Black-Belt instructors are certified, in Japan, by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai (DNBK). Established in 1895, the DNBK is the oldest martial arts organization in Japan.
Our discipline is Goju-Ryu Karate-Do developed by Chojun Miyagi in the Okinawan islands of Japan. Goju-Ryu is one of the main styles of Okinawan/Japanese Karate-Do, featuring a combination of hard and soft techniques. Both principles, hard and soft, come from the ancient martial arts book Bubishi. Go, which means hard, refers to closed hand techniques and straight or linear movement. Ju, which means soft, refers to open hand techniques and circular or lateral movement. Goju-Ryu incorporates both methods into its curriculum, combining hard striking attacks such as kicks and closed hand punches with softer open hand techniques for attacking, blocking, and controlling the opponent, including locks & submissions, grappling, take downs & throws. Our practice includes Junbi Undo (Calesthenics), Kihon (Basics), Kata (Forms), Bunkai (Kata Applications), and Kumite (Sparring Applications).
