Welcome to the home page of Visalia Karate-Do. We are a school of Traditional Japanese Budo. Established in Visalia, California in 1975, we are the oldest Karate-Do school in the city. As a member of the Parks & Recreation Dept, we are the official Karate-Do program for the City of Visalia. We are a dojo of the Seiwa-Kai division of the JKF Goju-Kai in Japan. We are also certified in Japan by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai (DNBK). The DNBK was established in 1895, and is the oldest Martial Arts organization in Japan.
Our primary discipline is Goju-Ryu Karate-Do. Our physical practice includes Kata (forms), Bunkai (Kata Applications), and Kumite (Sparring Applications). Our secondary discipline is Kenshin-Ryu Bo-Jutsu (Long Staff). We also emphasize the protocols and philosophies of Japanese Budo.
Goju-Ryu is a traditional style of Karate-Do developed in the Okinawan Islands of Japan. It features a combination of both hard and soft techniques. Go which means hard, refers to closed-hand techniques and straight or linear movements. Ju which means soft, refers to open-hand techniques and circular or lateral movements. Goju-Ryu practices methods that include body strengthening, conditioning, correct breathing, and a complete approach to self-defense. It incorporates both hard and soft strategies for blocking-striking-kicking as well as controlling the opponent with grappling techniques including holds, submissions, take-downs & throws. Our school enjoys an authentically rich lineage directly to the founder of the Goju-Ryu system, Chojun Miyagi.
